Valledupar, October 16, 2025. Spinning wheels, metallic clashes, shouts of encouragement and a ball that crosses the air with force. In wheelchair basketball, skill is measured in seconds and tactics are deployed on a court where mobility is redefined. This sport, which combines power, precision and strategy, is one of the most visible symbols of the global Paralympic movement. At Valledupar 2026, the discipline will once again be one of the most vibrant on the Paralympic program, with teams representing the ultimate expression of the game in this exciting sport.
Wheelchair basketball follows the basic rules of conventional basketball, with some adaptations related to mobility and contact. Each team consists of five players on the court and seven substitutes. Athletes use specially designed, lightweight chairs with wheel angles that facilitate quick turns and changes of direction. The court has the same dimensions as Olympic basketball (28 meters long by 15 meters wide) and the hoops are 3.05 meters high. The ball is identical to the traditional one and the games consist of four 10-minute quarters.

For athletes
.The functional classification of players is established according to their level of mobility and trunk control. Values are assigned from 1.0 (highest impairment) to 4.5 (lowest impairment), and total on-court points per team cannot exceed 14. This ensures fairness between teams with different types of disabilities. Athletes compete for points, block, dribble and basket with the same intensity and precision as in conventional basketball, albeit with millimeter coordination of arms and wheels.

This sport in Valledupar 2026
Wheelchair basketball will be played from July 4 to 9 at the Basketball Coliseum of the Unidad Deportiva La Gota Fría, with 144 athletes from 6 countries per branch, who will compete for the two gold medals of the tournament. At the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games, Colombia in the men’s category and Brazil in the women’s category won the bronze medal in an event dominated by North American teams. Four years later, in Santiago 2023, the United States, which won everything, defeated Colombia in the men’s final, leaving this team with the silver medal, while Brazil, repeated the bronze medal in the women’s tournament of this multisport event.
The journey of this sport in the Parasuramerican context began in Santiago 2014, host of the first Parasuramerican Games, where wheelchair basketball was one of the foundational disciplines of the program. On that occasion, Argentina took the stage by winning undefeated in both branches, achieving the first gold in wheelchair basketball of the Parasuramerican Games. As a curious case, the host Chile took the silver medals in both branches, while Colombia won the bronze, just like the Australians. Since then, the region’s competitive level has grown steadily, boosted by development programs and consolidated national leagues.

Recent competitive projection
.At the last two World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, the South American presence confirmed the technical growth of the region. At the Dubai 2023 World Championship, where the United States was crowned men’s champion and the Netherlands retained the women’s title, the Brazilian and Argentine teams reached intermediate positions in the overall standings, consolidating their competitive consistency. Recently in the Copa America Bogota 2025, in the men’s category, Argentina finished second, behind the United States, which won the title, leaving the host country (Colombia) in third place and these three teams qualified directly for the Wheelchair Basketball World Cup Ottawa 2026 (Canada). Meanwhile, in the women’s category, the USA once again showed its power by winning the title, while Brazil and Argentina took the silver and bronze medals, as well as direct qualification to the 2026 World Cup (Canada). These results anticipate a high-level hemispheric dispute in Valledupar 2026, with teams that arrive in frank technical ascent and with renewed podium aspirations.
Wheelchair basketball is, above all, a display of synchronicity and resilience. Every play combines strength, speed and tactical thinking. Each basket is the result of precise choreography of chairs and arms that proves that, beyond physical limitations, talent and passion always find their way to the hoop.
Whitewater basketball is a game of strength, speed and tactical thinking.
